Soft Ledges is an indie rock/noise folk band from Chicago, IL.  Formed in 2015 by Shelley Miller and Chris Geisler, they make dark, angular, delicate music about struggle and survival - think Vic Chesnutt and PJ Harvey having a mid-blizzard tea party with Low.  At once confessional and confrontational, their songs stare down darkness until it coughs up hope.  They released their self-titled debut album (self-released) in Nov 2016.

LA NIÑA

Be careful when the bone breaks
Don't lie for love less than honest
You'll never fix how that heart's been torn
Be careful when the dam starts to quiver
Don't drive so close to the water
You won't know what hits you 'til its got your tongue

When your bones hit the river
You're just another girl in the water
When your bones hit the river
You're just another girl in the water
No need to drag you out
No need to drag this out
No need to drag anybody down

Don't wanna be the one to say it
But I'll say it 'til you hear me
Nothing good's gonna come of it
You better run
'Cause you learned to be the good girl
The pretty girl, the nice girl
Girl who never needed nothing
And now you're learning what good that does

When your bones hit the river
You're just another girl in the water
When your bones hit the river
You're just another girl in the water
No need to drag you out
No need to drag this out
No need to drag anybody down

Comes a time when the rain leaks
Straight through your walls and it hits you
It hits you when you're sleeping
Babe, he's gonna hit you when you're sleeping
Any second the phones gonna ring
It's gonna be you and your problems
And I can't say nothing
No I can't say nothing

When your bones hit the river
You're just another girl in the water
When your bones hit the river
You're just another girl in the water
No need to drag you out
No need to drag this out
No need to drag anybody down

TEAR ME DOWN

Tear me down, build me up backwards
It's the only way to know
Tear me down, build me up backwards
It's the only way to understand

You see I had a dream that he did what he wanted
And he followed me back to the light
And when I awoke again, I was just shaking
And nothing you do can make me feel alright
Tear me down
I don't know where I am

Hold on, hold on, we can be stronger
Than the monsters in your bed, you said, you said
But I am not and I just start shaking again
You see, I had a secret, put it in my pocket
With some stickers and a handful of change
But the rain made it rust and it cut me up inside
And I'll never be that free again
And I don't know where I am

You say eenie-meenie-miney-mo
Catch me by my fingers, by my toes
And if I holler, let me....
Go

Well there were two little girls playing jump-rope games after dark
Singing 'Miss Suzy Says' under the bare bulb of the streetlight in the corner park
Singing 'Ollie-ollie-oxen-free', mother may I take one step home
I want to come home now
Cause I don't know where I am
Tear me down if you want to understand

Cinderella dressed in went upstairs to kiss a
Made a mistake, kissed a snake, tell me
How many doctors, how many doctors
How many doctors did it take?
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight
Nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen
Out... out... out... out

ORION

When the ladder don't seem to add up
And you've had it with your habits
And the white noise is your only voice
And the piecemeal falls all to pieces

Orion, Orion
Orion, Orion

When the white horse is a wild ghost
And the bedsheets burn the air you breathe
And the white noise is a lion's roar
And the worst hits, and you can't learn to forget

Orion, Orion
Orion, Orion

Who's calling me out
When you're saying my name, when you're saying my name
Who's calling me out
When you're saying my name, when you're saying my name

Orion, Orion
Orion, Orion
Orion, Orion
Orion, Orion

DEER FLY BLUES

In five days, you learn to see

Twenty one, you learn to speak
What never is and never was
Lies limp beneath your tongue

In seven days, you'll run your race
Beat to shit and full of grace
Meditate on black and white
What's dark now will be light

Cross of blood where the deer fly stung
God bless your broken bones
Cross of flowers on the grave
Teach me to be brave

Your teacher comes on swollen wings
She says your name, but not too sweet
She says don't bother looking back
God bless your broken past

Her yellow eyes like sunsets bleed
All your stories into dreams
Dip your feet down in that mud
There's nothing left but love

And a cross of blood where the deer fly stung
God bless your broken bones
Cross of flowers on the grave
Teach me to be brave

Cross of blood where the deer fly stung
God bless your broken bones
Cross of flowers on the grave
Teach me to be brave
Teach me to be brave
Teach me to be brave
Teach me...

THE BELLS AND YOU BENEATH

Birds are leaving, the bells and you beneath
Choir is leaning, the bells and you beneath
Somone's saying your name, telling us to be proud
But the story's too shaky, the words are too loud

Grasshopper high, mud on the ground
When you go up, you're not coming back down

Black car too shiny, the bells and you beneath
Felt a little dizzy driving, the bells and you beneath
The sky is too grey, the words are too clean
They mean what they say, but they can't say what you mean

Grasshopper high, mud on the ground
When you go up, you're not coming back down
Grasshopper high, mud on the ground
When you go up, you're not coming back down

Handful of dirt
Head in my hands
Find a good tree to lean on
'Cause it's too hard to stand
Choir is singing
The bells are so high
The sun's slowly sinking
The words are too bright

Grasshopper high, mud on the ground
When you go up, you're not coming back down
Grasshopper high, mud on the ground
When you go up, you're not coming back down

Long Way to the Ground

It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
And you can't feel a thing 'cept the feelings
Burning you up like a fever, gonna tear you down
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground

It's a short fuse, it's a short fuse in your mind
It's a short fuse, it's a short fuse in your mind
Got you running, got you running, hey babe, you're gonna be alright
It's just a short fuse, just a short fuse in your mind

So give up, give up the fight
Against every little thing that you can't do right
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
Give up, give up the fight
Against every little thing that you can't do right
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
And you're never gonna get back up 'til you come down

It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground

So give up, give up the fight
Against every little thing that you can't do right
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
Give up, give up the fight
Against every little thing that you can't do right
It's a long way, it's a long way to the ground
And you're never gonna get back up 'til you come down
No, you're never gonna get back up 'til you come down

Seven Stories

I could drop you from the cradle
Seven stories, you wouldn't even wake up
I could feed you so you'd never be hungry
I could hold you so you'd never be lonely

But I can't give you anything you want
No, I can't give you anything you want

I could drive you through the lightning
Sixteen hours, spinning all the way
Just to watch you flick me off like a match head
Say your peace, and then be on your way

'Cause I can't give you anything you want
No, I can't give you anything you...

Hands on my shoulder to keep me from running
Hands on my shoulder to keep me from guessing
Hands on my shoulder to keep me
But you're never gonna bring me home
Hands on my shoulder to keep me from running
Hands on my shoulder to keep me from guessing
Hands on my shoulder to keep me
But you're never gonna bring me home

'Cause I can't give you anything you want
No, I can't give you anything you want
I can't give you, I can't give you
No, I can't give you anything you want

Highlight Reel

When the words give in, don't tell me how to feel
When the picture fades, there'll be no highlight reel
To say this was love
This was love
This was love
This was love

When the stars go out, don't have to tell 'em how to shine
When the cards are dealt, don't run around screaming 'this one's mine'
Just say it was love
It was love
It was love
It was love
It was love
It was love
It was love
It was love

Don't Wait

Love's gonna come for you
Don't wait, go and get it if you can
Someone's gonna run to you
Don't wait, go and meet 'em if you can
'Cause sorrow's a deep muddy water
Trying to flood the valley

Don't be alone when it hits you
Don't be alone when it gets to you
If you're alone, I'll come as fast as I can

A change is gonna come for you
Don't wait, go and change things if you can
A light is gonna shine on you
Don't wait, shine your own light if you can
'Cause sorrow's a deep muddy water
Trying to flood the valley

Don't be alone when it hits you
Don't be alone when it gets to you
If you're alone, I'll come as fast as I can

Don't be alone
Don't be alone
If you're alone, I'll come as fast as I can
Don't be alone when it hits you
Don't be alone when it gets to you
If you're alone, I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can
I'll come as fast as I can

Ladder

When the ladder descends
And I learn to crawl again
Let the sun mark my grave
Let the birds take all words away
Let the shadows fall where they may
Let the wind take my name

When the ladder
When the ladder
When the ladder
When the ladder descends

If I fall with my heart in my hands
It will save me in the end
And a sparrow will come to me
And carry me under her wing
And a lion on her back
To the banks of the lookingglass

When the ladder
Whe the ladder
When the ladder
When the ladder descends

An immensely brave and honest record.
Laundry Day Records - October 2016

This is a spectacularly good debut album. In fact, it’s arguably better than some albums seasoned performers put out long after they’ve made their appearance on the scene.
Brett David Stewart, The Independent Spotlight - October 2016

A sense of melody that is both brilliant in its architecture and daring in the willingness to go places unexpected.
Michael Wheeler, Current Music Thoughts - November 2016

This album will pull emotions out of you that you never knew you were capable of feeling...every note is played with an immense amount of conviction.
Jamsphere review of Soft Ledges debut album - October 2016

...The album packs a far bigger punch, both musically and emotionally, than a lot of albums released this year from more established acts. It is a bold and confident record with a greater depth than you would generally expect from a duo.
     Belwood Music - November 2016

Truly passionate and boldly innovative...unyielding in their independence of expression and creativity.
Beyond the Record - November 2016

Shelley hits the big note perfectly...a subtle lead up to a powerful climax. The rawness in her vocal tone reminded me of Patti Smith and Grace Slick
April Reviews the Tunes - October 2016

The songs featured within the band’s debut makes me think of artists as diverse as Sonic Youth and Elliott Smith...
The Bandcamp Diaries - review and interview w. Shelley Miller - October 2016

It's one of those albums where it's hard to predict what's to follow and I like that, especially if the quality is there.  In this case it's there in bucket loads.
     Beehive Candy - October 2016

...It’s dark on the surface but I get this sense, this twinge of redemption at the very end.
     earthings! - November 2016

"Highlight Reel"...shows the tension and the rough lines of the sound.
Son of Marketing - October 2016

Think Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man" with more dissonance and less cryptic lyrics.
Chicago Music Source - September 10, 2016 (live show review)
